Individual Therapy: What if you couldn’t fail?
What does it Mean?
What if you absolutely knew that no matter what, something really specific that you really wanted (for example a certain weight/shape), certain amount of money invested or saved, or even a certain career you’d be able to obtain?
You’d probably go right after that, (well obviously). What stops us? To be honest that’s not so important, what is more important is knowing that you can have it, with just time.
The Old JG Wentworth commercial, it's my money and I want it now, just doesn’t work.
But what will work?
Simply understanding that knowing the goal you want is extremely realistic, followed by being ok with how long it is going to take you to get there.
For instance, let's take the example of my favorite vacation, a cruise. Let’s go into our personal examples/pillars.
My current goal is a weight between 175 and 180 pounds, currently I am right around 190-200 (yes I am unsure).
What if I knew that I could not fail? I would go to the weights six or seven days a week, hit the stairs for 40-50 minutes, and the weights for the same time.
I’d make sure 80% of my food intake was green vegetables, and would have a little more self control when going out with friends and socializing.
Now what is the most realistic, slow, methodical but also timeframe I can put on this goal. Well a month or two would be a lot of crash dieting, calorie deficit, two a days in the gym, and mostly an enhanced pressure on myself to reach this goal in a timeframe.
While I can pursue this goal aggressively (a blog I definitely plan on writing a little more about in the future), it’s not the most realistic (although possible), but also will be strenuous, and have a timeframe attached outcome, which will just cause pressure, and suffering.
If I knew for sure, and trust me I do, I can be 175-180 pounds, or most of all wearing clothes comfortably between a 30-31 waist, and men’s small (this is what motivates me), of course I’d do all the above (gym, vegetables/protein).
Six Months to a year are going to pass anyways, and you know what when they do, I’d rather be closer to my goal, or there, rather than saying gee I wish I was eating protein and green veggies and in the gym six days a week.
What might it look like for you?
Perhaps you are saying to yourself, gee I wish when I go out, I would just muster up the courage to say, “Hey you’re kinda cute, what’s your name (trust me guys I know its hard, I hate it!)?”
Do you really want six months to go by and you’re still saying to yourself gee, I wish I said hello to that girl that looked at me.
How about as we started? What if you knew you could not fail? You’d go up and say hello in two seconds, “Hey, what’s up, you’re kinda cute, what’s your name.
What if you always wanted to go on a dream 4000.00 dollar vacation? What if you knew of course you could take that vacation?
Maybe you can’t take it in a year, or two. But what if you knew, you absolutely could take it? You would save the money for it.
If you absolutely knew you could take a dream 4000 dollar vacation, you would save for it and go on it! Sure maybe you can’t save the 800 dollars, it would take to save it up for it in a year.
You know what two years are going to pass, and if you knew you absolutely could go on it, you’d save that 400 bucks a month (24 months to save instead of a year).
Hey two years are gonna go by anyways, might as well save for that dream vacation.
Ok one more, what if you absolutely knew you could definitely save the money and go on that vacation, except it would need three years of savings.
Hey three years are going to…(You get the point).
Would you definitely save that 112.00 dollars a month for 36 months?
You absolutely would, because you know of course you could go on that vacation and of course you could save the money (it just might take a little longer than you wish).
Next Steps
I’d love to hear what’s the one thing you absolutely knew you could not fail at, and who knows maybe we wind up working together.
