The family is used to distinguish a family group consisting of most commonly, a father and mother and their children. Another kind of family - called the "extended family" exists but what we usually think of as "family" is actually what we might more properly call the "nuclear family." Nuclear families can be any size, as long as the family can support itself and there are only children and two parents, nuclear families meet its individual members’ basic needs since available resources are only divided among few individuals or the family would be known as an extended family. In many societies the "nuclear family" is the most common form of family, although in many times in history as well as many parts of the earth what we now call the extended family was actually the more common form of family.
