5 Reasons Why "Same-Old Marriage Counseling" (SOMC) Is A Bad Idea

	"Same-Old Marriage Counseling" (SOMC) requires too much work getting started. One of the biggest reasons "Same-Old Marriage Counseling" doesn't work is that most therapists spend too much time talking about the "history" of the relationship, and allow the couple to talk on and on about their own experiences in the marriage.  This may sound shocking to you, but when therapists allow couples to "keep doing what they've been doing all along expecting different results," those therapists are actually encouraging bad results.  The truth is that most "starts" in counseling are a huge, very expensive waste of time and unfortunately set the tone and direction of the whole counseling process... namely, failure!  In most cases, only about 5-10 minutes of real therapy happens within the first hour - or ANY hour of counseling.  The rest of it, frankly, is fluff.  Therapists call it "building relationship with the client," but isn't the couple there because of their relationship?
	"Same-Old Marriage Counseling"(SOMC) has built-in confusions that guarantee failure.   Most therapists are trained to "follow the lead" of their clients in what the clients wish to talk about.  How is that supposed to help you when you've already been over and over and over the same things for years on end?  How in the world are YOU supposed to know what to talk about... how are you even supposed to know what you are thinking and feeling?  Most marriages in trouble involve two people who - by the time they come to counseling - are so mixed up they have no idea what to talk about other than "this marriage sucks." (And "it's the other person's fault!")
	"Same-Old Marriage Counseling"(SOMC) is expensive and complicated.  A really good established therapist will cost you between $125 and $300 an hour or more, depending on where you live.  You might be able to pay less for "SOMC," but you'll probably be working with a student or inexperienced therapist just building their practice. Most marriage counseling runs its course in about a year (generally with no results) so if you are meeting for therapy the standard one hour a week you could be as much as $12,000 dollars in the hole and still looking at divorce.  And if you are like most people, you'll leave the majority of your therapy sessions scratching your head wondering what just happened, and why you plunked down a couple hundred dollars for it.  Here's a huge problem.  Therapy is stressful and complicated... and most people literally can't even REMEMBER what happened during the session.  By the way, most therapists require a 24 hour cancellation notice, or they CHARGE you for the missed session regardless of your reasons.
	"Same-Old Marriage Counseling"(SOMC) demands a huge investment of time. You have to either take time off work or try to get on the therapist's evening schedule.  Most established therapists don't work evenings so you have to try to get there during the work/school day. You have to coordinate with each other's calendar.  If you have kids you have to figure out how to get them taken care of while you go to the session.  You have to drive there, park, wait in the waiting room, meet with the counselor for an hour or so, go back to your car(s), and get home, only (in many cases) to find all kinds of problems have come up at home in your absence.
	"Same-Old Marriage Counseling"(SOMC) - shockingly - usually has no "end." One of the most shocking things about marriage counseling as far as I am concerned is that therapists and clients rarely discuss the topic of "how can we tell if we're done here?"  And because of that most therapy clients either just "linger on indefinitely" or they quit after a while of discovering that "nothing is happening here."   In most cases people simply just stop coming to therapy because they get tired of it, not because they actually get results.  That is a complete tragedy!  That's why I have always worked with my clients to define specific goals, exact goals that we are working for, so we can know when we get there.  But that is exceedingly rare in the counseling world.  My friend Carl said that when he was in therapy the only thing that really happened was "I paid my therapist's mortgage for a couple of years."  That's pretty cynical but it's unfortunately more often true than false.  Some therapists just keep you on a string in order to keep their income stable.
